Are you constantly pondering what your next step should be in the development of your tennis skills? What about the option of training? Have you considered taking a few private lessons, attending a group class, or participating in a tennis clinic?
My experience with all of these training options has been extremely positive and productive. As a beginner, my group lesson instructor provided a solid introduction to the fundamentals of tennis in a fun and relaxed environment. Private lessons were instrumental in helping me achieve a higher level of consistency and movement on the court. During clinics, I learned how to be a more effective doubles partner and developed more advanced tennis strokes.
Training Has Benefits
Pursuing training with a professional instructor can boost to your confidence on the court. When a professional observes various aspects of your game during a lesson or clinic, they can provide immediate feedback about how to make adjustments that will improve specific shots.
In addition to advancing your technical skills, you will learn how to think on the court. You also have the opportunity of shot repetition, improving retention of what you’ve heard and seen demonstrated.
Finally, in group classes and clinics, you will almost certainly meet new people – expanding the number of people you can call on when you’re trying to organize a singles or doubles match. This is especially valuable when you are new to the sport and want to play as often as possible.
You Have Options
These three training approaches appeal to a range of personality types and learning styles. Some players prefer the personalized instruction that comes with a private lesson. The dynamics of a group setting appeal to social butterflies. Visual learners appreciate being able to observe others during clinics.
Private Lessons are typically one hour sessions and the most expensive option. You can choose to set the training agenda or leave it up to your tennis pro.
Finding the right tennis pro for your learning style is critical for achieving the best results. Taking a lesson from 2 or 3 instructors can help you identify the best fit in terms of personality and style.
Group Classes are usually offered as a package with a lower per session cost. There is usually a main area of focus for each series covering specific shots or improving your serve.
The class format often includes time for instruction and playing out points or games. This approach promotes retention since you can immediately apply what you just learned during the class.
Clinics are a hybrid between Private Lessons and Group Classes. The focus is on more advanced topics such as doubles strategy and tactics or progressing to the next ranking level.
These single or multiple events are often limited to 5 or 6 people to ensure that participants receive sufficient individual attention.
You can find private instructors and group classes through your local tennis clubs and parks and recreation organizations. There are also Websites that offer referrals to tennis pros in your area.
